42 CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER WEDNESDAY JANUARY 27 1954 Horseshoes 'Carmen Jones' Nixes ilm Cast Otto Is His Man BY BILLY ROSE Back in 19 43 I produced a show by Oscar Hammcrstein II called Jones" It was a success tor several reasons: irst its basic plot and music oin Bizet mem orable opera Sec ond new libretto and lyr ics were in easy to understand English and story was given an American set ting Third it was performed by a talented all Negro cast During the last 10 years almost every major studio in Hollywood has tried to buy the film rights to And each time the conversation has gone about like this: My studio would like to make a movie of Have you got the cash on you? We can the contracts in the morning Of course there'll have to be a clause giving us the right to use an all white cast ME Not interested What's Offensive About a Negro Cast? Movies unlike the theater are for a world audi ence We've got to be careful not to offend anybody ME What's offensive about a Negro cast? BIGSHOT The theaters in the South play a movie if it has a lot of colored actors ME Malarkey "Carmen sire during its four year run played ajmost every city in the Deep South and as a rule to packed houses BIGSHOT (Patronizingly) got a lot to learn about the picture business Now how about the contract? Go soak your bead in celery tonic And that's how' it went until a month ago when Otto Prem inger producer of the contro ci sial "The Moon Is dropped in I've got an in dependent outfit and like to make a movie of "Carmen Jones" Would you and Oscar like to sell the film rights? ME I suppose you want to use a white cast Definitely not It was written for a colored oneME Mow about the Deep South? South Doesn't Worry Him a Bit Th South doesn't worry me a bit Con sidering its population it has as many cultured people as the North Aren't you afraid of your investment?
