Preferring to do my own maintenance now due to trust issues with garages. Though I’ll still have to trust someone to do the cambelt, as that’s a step too far for me. Engine oil/filter, Air filter, Gearbox oil, Alko axle greasing, brake caliper cleaning/pad change all done. I’m fed up of garages telling me the brake fluid’s ok and doesn’t need changing so that’s now on my list for DIY but this also incorporates the clutch fluid on on our manual 6 speed X250 2014 Ducato. I’ve tried searching in the usual way and can only find a brief mention of someone changing it but no description of how/best method. Anyone done it successfully on their X250? Or point me to a good YouTube video that’s not about the Comfortmatic.

Find the slave cylinder and bleed nipple then just bleed fluid through until clear/bubble free. If you can't find it it is likely to be inside the bell housing!

The master cylinder is outside the gearbox, so if you can get underneath it shouldn't be a difficult job - the slave however is a gearbox out job. I had the master cylinder changed and it wasn't expensive - I presume they had to bleed the clutch system afterward. Unfortunately, my problem turned out to be the slave.................. Just remember the brake and clutch share a reservoir.
Changing the brake fluid doesn't do a very good job of flushing out the circuit for the clutch. I've heard there's a bleed point that is accessible. I've not found it though.

The clutch slave cylinder is in the gearbox but the bleed nipple is on the top right of the gearbox, bleed in the normal manner.

The clutch bleed is easy, but you have to remove the air box to get to it. Well, you don't have too, you can do it by feel, but it's easier to see what your doing!

From what I’ve learnt so far it’s my intention remove the old fluid from the shared master cylinder, under the bonnet and fill with new dot 4. I understand that there is a spring clip on the slave cylinder that has to be slid out to allow the hose to be pulled out a little, then crack open the bleed nipple and using some rubber tube and a syringe to pull through the old fluid until new stuff is evident, keeping an eye on the level in the master. Then nip up the bleed nipple, push the hose back in and secure the spring clip. Does this sound correct to anyone that’s done it ?

Our's is a 2019 X290 On ours the clutch bleed is located is located above the gearbox accessed from underneath and behind the gearbox. The bleed nipple [ shown with pipe attached] is just a bleed nipple, it does NOT turn. There's a small metal sliding clip not shown in my photo, this slides out and then the white housing slides apart. You have slide the white housing apart, which then uncovers the channel to the nipple. It's a Twonk of a job.Don't be pressing the clutch peddle once it's opened, it dumps all the fluid all over you , and pushes the housing completely apart [ yep, I have that T shirt as well . Fill the combined fluid completely. I found [ !!!], When you have sussed out
how to open the bleed port, attach a drain off pipe to the nipple, have some one push the peddle gently, then open the port gently. The peddle will stay down now. Allow the fluid to flow through the nipple till clean.Close and secure the port. Lift the peddle up manually. Press the peddle again and it should have pressure. It was a "seat of your pants job" for me, and one I'd be hesitant to try again, but I don't know your mechanical skill level, I would describe mine as average. It did feel amazing once done, really light.

the reason it costs so much at a garage is the fact it's a PITA job easier done over a pit or on the ramp

That’s confused me more now as I’ve not seen that set up and can’t understand how it works to change all the fluid between master and slave. It appears to be an inline thing rather than at the end (slave) of the line. How does all the fluid get changed, surely depressing the clutch would only expel the fluid from the master to that valve and not the fluid beyond to the slave cylinder.

On a manual gearbox this could be done as part of a brake bleed, Using a vacuum bleeder. The comformatic bleed is beyond the scope of this guide. How to use pump. Fit pump line to open hole in lid. Fit empty line to the hole with a pipe fitting...
www.fiatforum.com
Again not a x250 but a 2017 x290. A noddy method with a 12 quid vacum pump. Note: there are at least 2 bleed nipple types and methods used depending on gearbox.

When I did my X250 a few years ago, I removed the air filter housing to gain access to the bleed nipple, as shown in previous posts, you have to pull the wire clip half out and pull the pipe gently outwards to release the fluid. I did mine with a low air pressure bleeder to the top of the reservoir but I would NOT recommend this method because after the fluid in the pipe ran clear and I boxed it off I had no clutch. I tried two or three times, nothing!
I then remembered, from many years ago, Back Bleeding, so went to Halfords and bought the appropriate syringe, filled it with fluid, connected it to the bleed nipple, got someone to hold the clutch pedal down and gently forced the fluid up to the reservoir where I had previously removed sufficient for this operation to take place. This worked!
In future, I will try releasing the bleed nipple with pipe attached with other end in fluid and just let gravity slowly do the job while I concentrate on getting NO air in the reservoir!
You are right of course, not all of the system fluid will be changed BUT if you change the gearbox oil at the same time, you will certainly notice the difference.
Good luck!

I replaced my x250 clutch slave cylinder a while ago and I seem to remember the recommended way to refill was to reverse fill i.e fill from the bleed nipple. I'll check if I still have the slave cylinder fitting instructions and get back.

Thinking back, I used my Pela vacuum oil changer to pull the fluid through. Mike.
