Does this game run really poorly for anyone else? Anytime there's more than just my character and dirt on the screen the game slows to a crawl.

It's a beta dude it's been stated that it's not optimized. Yes people are having performance issues. No you are not alone. You're welcome.

Thanks! No reason for everyone to be so defensive about it being a beta, I was just wondering if people were having the same issues.

People are being real assholes for no good reason. It's perfectly fine to discuss the issues a beta has and possibly find workarounds or ways to improve the experience. Maybe there's some way to get better framerates? Maybe no one else was having bad framerates and he'd figure out it was something on his end? Don't be a dick to people asking honest questions. Anyways, for me, the game doesn't slow down unless there's a lot of stuff going on. I'm on a Phenom II X4 with 8gb of RAM. Sometimes I got sporadic slowdown but it runs smooth 99% of the time. The 1% is when I triggered a massive sand cascade or something along those lines.

Pretty much, I'm finding the game virtually unplayable and since I didn't see any discussion of performance issues in the several pages I read I thought it might just be me. I've been in betas where changing some seemingly random setting would improve performance by 500%, but after checking here and the official forums it sounds like its more of a "check back in a few weeks and maybe it will be running better" issue.

So make sure that's not an issue too. That being said, we triggered a massive underground landslide on our homeworld on my server. The results were crazy. Caused some odd physics issues, mobs were much easier to kill, and people could be aggressively chased by items they had picked up but hadn't reached their character yet.

That's one advantage, when the game is really chugging monsters just sort of trudge over to you to be killed. Also you can breathe underwater.

3. Platinum does not seem to generate on Gamma Sector worlds despite being necessary for armor/advancement.

Random chests have it in quantities of, like, 10 ore so you can get it but it's one hell of a grind.

Just a note letting you know I solved my low framerate problem by making sure steam.exe was not running in compatibility mode. (it was running in Vista compatibility mode and greyed out) just make sure to click the box to change settings for all users.

Hope this helps someone else, makes the game much more enjoyable now my PC doesn't freak out at the hint of animation.

Suddenly the game is playable! Thanks.

I feel like this game would be a lot more fun if they severely reduced the fuel requirements or did away with them entirely. When I play the game my process is usually something like

1)fart around on a planet
2)decide I should go to another planet
3)remember that I'd have to farm a ton of fuel to do so
4)get discouraged
5)quit

Are you literally doing NOTHING the entire time you're "farting around on a planet" ? You can get enough fuel to take you across the universe in 5-10 minutes on any planet. 30 minutes and you'll have max fuel. I guess the problem here is you actually have to PLAY the game to progress, if you don't want to do that then mod it so that you can burn your starter flashlight to give you 1000 fuel and go nuts warping from planet to planet doing...nothing?

I guess I'd rather do something that's actually fun as opposed to systematically deforesting a planet or coal mining. I mean seriously, those two activities or more or less synonymous with misery.

I'm playing this game to go on fun space adventures and build cool structures, not to more fully understand the suffering of the proletariat. From my perspective the fuel gauge does nothing but eat up time and make the game less fun. I guess it would make sense if the game was an MMO with an economy, or a survival sim or something, but it isn't.

I went mining for about an hour earlier and came out with 50 coal. So two hours to jump to another system. Woo!

Why are people so incredibly defensive about this game anyway?

Dang.

They at least have the FTL style ship battles in at this point right? How many trees do I need to feed my spaceship to fight off an Apex cruiser?

I think all the doom and gloom about updates is silly too, but it's seriously like five or six people here that are naysaying. You don't have to play the victim that hard.

Are there any actual conspiracy theorists in this thread or just people making jokes about Chucklefish sucking?

The game really needs innate rapid out-of-combat healing if you're expected to regularly go under half health.

I don't think Dwarf Fortress is really an apt comparison. It's one weirdo doing his own thing making a game that goes way above and beyond anything else in it's genre and releasing it for free.

Chucklefish got over a mil to make Terraria in Space.

Yeah, I looked at that progression chart and thought "Hey that actually looks pretty cool" but then I remembered how much mining in this game sucks. I think the problem is both how slow mining is and the shape caves are generated in.

I remember thinking a year ago that all Early Access was a scam and an exercise in frustration, but that Starbound seemed to be the exception to the rule. They seemed to have a roadmap, and know exactly how they were gonna get from the game's current state to the release, and they were releasing updates and talking about upcoming poo poo a lot and....what happened? Was this just a fever dream, or did they go crazy and forget about making videos?

I dunno, in any sort of project roadmap saying you're "76% done" or whatever is pretty meaningless. The only points you can really count on are 0% and 100%. Of course even if a system gets to 100% they might decide it needs to be retooled for more grind.
