1. The annual Sound Broadcasting Equipment Show, otherwise known as SBES, has been cancelled this year due to lack of bookings. The event website, SBES.com simply states that the show has been cancelled. One exhibitor, who has been in touch with Radio Today, says how saddened he is with the loss of the show, and is waiting to hear if his initial payments will be returned after he received a letter saying the organiser has gone into administration. More

2. The microphone used by Lord Haw-Haw to broadcast Nazi propaganda into British homes has been discovered after 64 years, along with a pile of scripts that he wrote and read out over the air. The items were seized by soldier Cyril Millwood when the Allies invaded Germany in 1945. Mr Millwood was a gunner with 258 Battery, 65th Anti-Tank Regiment which stormed the abandoned radio station in Hamburg from where Joyce had been broadcasting just days before. Mr Millwood kept the metal microphone and its case and the documents in the loft of his home in Ware, Hertfordshire, for most of his life until he died several years ago. More

3. Commercial Radio industry body RadioCentre is claiming BBC Radio 2 is failing properly to serve older listeners, saying the present station service licence is so imprecise it could be anything from easy listening to dance music. The comments are part of its submission to the BBC Trust, “Reach not Reith: How Radio 2 is prioritising popularity not public purposes” in response to the Trust’s review of Radio 2 and 6 Music. RadioCentre says in the last decade, Radio 2 has shifted its programming policies which have driven its audience younger to the detriment of older listeners, Commercial Radio and the fragile radio ecology. 4. The newly formed radio holding company, Your Media Communications Group has purchased the business and assets of 3TR, Bath FM, Brunel FM and Quaywest FM. The group is chaired by Stephen Dexter, a former partner at Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants; fellow board members include broadcast veteran Roger Day and Nigel Reeve. More

5. Absolute Radio is launching a new radio station, under the working title of Absolute CTRL, which will broadcast live music events. In a departure from the traditional radio-funding model of spot ads, the new station will be funded mainly through sponsorship and promotions. According to the new DAB station's licence, it will play "a selection of rock and pop music aimed at a broad adult audience, featuring sessions and music performed before a live audience and tracks chosen by listeners". 6. UK-based Radio Caroline will be broadcasting live from the radio ship Ross Revenge over the Bank Holiday weekend 28th – 31st August. This time, the station will also be broadcasting with low power on mediumwave 531 kHz, which should be audible in Tilbury and the surrounding areas of south Essex and north Kent. More

7. A reunion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Atlantic 252 is to be held in Trim this September, and anyone who had any involvement in the Longwave giant is invited. The major event, held on the 11th, 12th and 13th of September includes a tour of Mornington House (the former station base), official meals, celebrations and a Saturday night party with The Pizzaman and special guest DJs. 8. Ofcom has outlined plans to change its media ownership and local radio rules - potentially paving the way for major changes to the local media landscape. It has published two consultations. The first is a consultation on recommendations to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Ben Bradshaw about the media ownership rules. These include recommendations to remove the local radio station ownership rules and to liberalise the rules around ownership of different media within a local area. The second consultation focuses on reforming the rules around commercial radio to ensure it can continue to deliver local content. More

9. Ofcom has made available extra FM frequencies in the capital for Community Radio stations, following the closure of several commercial stations. More

10. Plans for the Digital Upgrade of radio in the UK - unveiled in the Digital Britain report - have come under fire from fans of FM radio. More

The DRM Consortium Steering Board, which represents almost 100 members, affiliates and supporters, has welcomed the publication of the British Government’s strategic vision encompassed in the Digital Britain Report but has asked for DRM to be made part of the digital radio framework for the UK. In a letter sent to Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS), which published the report recently, the Consortium’s top decision-making body has pointed out that the Digital Britain report could miss out the opportunity to truly digitise Britain, especially in some rural and sparsely populated areas, by overlooking the valuable and economic solution offered by the Digital Radio Mondiale technology. More

12. Ofcom has given its permission for a small part of the radio spectrum to be used for wireless home cinema. Wideband data transmission technology, which operates on the radio spectrum, allowing high definition (HD) signals to be sent from set-top boxes and other video sources directly to a TV or monitor without the need for cables. More
