Pensacola area restaurant inspections: Two restaurants temporarily close due to violations (2024)

Here's the breakdown of recent restaurant inspections in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties for the week of May 20-26. Florida's restaurant owners are not required to post restaurant inspection results where guests can see them. So, every week, we provide that information for you.

During the latest round of inspections from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, two restaurants were temporarily closed, two restaurants received an administrative complaint, two restaurants received a high priority violation, and nine restaurants passed their first inspection with zero violations.

Fisherman’s Corner Restaurant

Inspection details: Complaint Partial Inspection on May 20

Follow-up inspection: Operations were ordered stopped until violations were corrected. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection the next day.

Total violations: Three total violations, with two high-priority violations on first inspection. Details of high-priority violations:

From first May 20 inspection:

  • High Priority - Live, small flying insects in kitchen, food preparation area, food storage area and/or bar area. Observed 10 live flying insects in the following locations: four in dish washing area, four in kitchen and two in dining location. **Warning**

  • High Priority - Raw sewage on ground of establishment. Observed grey water from triple sink and dish machine on floor in dish washing location and outside on ground under establishment. **Warning**

The restaurant also received three administrative during a second May 20 inspection:

  • Basic - From initial inspection: Basic - Ceiling/ceiling tiles/vents soiled with accumulated food debris, grease, dust, or mold-like substance. Observed dust and debris build up on ceiling and vents in kitchen. This violation was cited on March 20, 2024; June 20, 2023; and February 21, 2023. **Repeat Violation** **Admin Complaint** - From follow-up inspection May 20, 2024: During callback, observed ceilings and vents cleaned in kitchen.

  • Basic - From initial inspection: Basic - Wall soiled with accumulated grease, food debris, and/or dust. Observed walls throughout kitchen with heavy grease and debris build up. This violation was cited on March 20, 2024; June 20, 2023; and February 21, 2023. **Repeat Violation** **Admin Complaint** - From follow-up inspection May 20, 2024: During callback, walls cleaned with less debris in kitchen.

  • Intermediate - From initial inspection: Intermediate - Handwash sink not accessible for employee use at all times. Observed hand washing sink in kitchen blocked with make bar/batter station. This violation was sited on March 20, 2024; June 20, 2023; and February 21, 2023. **Repeat Violation** **Admin Complaint** - From follow-up inspection May 20, 2024: During callback, observed hand sink still blocked in kitchen.

Pensacola Country Club

Inspection details: Routine Inspection on May 21

Follow-up inspection: Operations ordered stopped until violations are corrected. A time extension was given the following day, but a follow-up inspection is still required.

Total violations: Six total violations, with five high-priority violationsDetails of high-priority violations:

  • High Priority - Dishmachine not sanitizing properly. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dishmachine is repaired and sanitizing properly. Observed high temperature dishwasher machine less than 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Operator set up three compartment sink sanitizer at 200 parts per million quaternary. **Warning**

  • High Priority - Live, small flying insects in kitchen, food preparation area, food storage area and/or bar area. Observed two live flying insects in kitchen at prep station. **Warning**

  • High Priority - Rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found. Observed approximately 11 rodent droppings in dry storage on floor under storage rack and two on window seal in dry storage in kitchen. **Warning**

  • High Priority - Stop sale issued on time/temperature control for safety food due to temperature abuse. Observed held over 24 hours: sliced tomatoes 44 degrees Fahrenheit, turkey 45 degrees Fahrenheit, hardboiled egg 46 degrees Fahrenheit, chicken salad 47 degrees Fahrenheit in reach-in cooler salad station.

  • High Priority - Time/temperature control for safety food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Observed held over 24 hours: sliced tomatoes 44 degrees Fahrenheit, turkey 45 degrees Fahrenheit, hardboiled egg 46 degrees Fahrenheit, chicken salad 47 degrees Fahrenheit in reach-in cooler salad station. Follow-up inspection: Violations required further review, but were not an immediate threat to the public. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection and met inspection standards the next day.

High Priority - Presence of insects, rodents, or other pests. Upon inspection observed presence of approximately 10 to 15 dead flying insects in the wall of front lobby. **Admin Complaint**

  • High Priority - Time/temperature control for safety food, other than whole meat roast, hot held at less than 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Make line hot box smoked chicken 126 degrees Fahrenheit less than 30 minutes

What agency inspects restaurants in Florida?

Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishment.

How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida?

What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean?

Basic violations are those considered against best practices.

A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report.

An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: "Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over."

An emergency order − when a restaurant is closed by the inspector − is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or welfare of the public.

A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license.
