Didier Deschamps has provided fans with an update on Kylian Mbappe, stating he will undergo surgery after the tournament and that further assessments will be taking place on Wednesday.

Mbappe was forced off with the brutal injury during the latter stages of Les Bleus' 1-0 victory over Austria in their opening group game of the tournament on Monday night.

It came after a nasty collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso, leading to genuine fears from the medical staff that Mbappe's Euro 2024 campaign could have been over.

The France Football Federation confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday morning that Mbappe would not require an immediate operation, but said he would require treatment 'for the next few days.'

Deschamps has now clarified that Mbappe will not undergo surgery during the tournament but that he will need to have an operation once he returns home from Euro 2024.

Deschamps also explained how the striker would undergo more tests on Wednesday to access the damage decide when the French captain will be fit enough to return to action.

He did offer the French fans a glimmer of hope though but stating Mbappe was 'already a little bit better' during his last check-up on Tuesday.

Speaking to the press,Deschamps said:'This Wednesday there will be more tests to see his evolution. It was a major shock. The medical staff did everything necessary to reduce it as much as possible, after the tests.

'Even if there is not surgery immediately, he will have to do it after the tournament. This morning he was already a little better, so we will see. We will follow it closely every day.'

French outlet L'Equiperevealed how the 25-year-old had visited the hospital immediately after the incident and explained how he returned to the hotel on Monday eveningafter undergoing various tests.

The results of these tests were reassuring, with the French Football Federation (FFF) revealing that a decision was made that immediate surgery was not needed, although they did confirm the Les Bleus captain had suffered a broken nose.

The statement released by the FFF said: 'Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team.

'Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Dusseldorf.

'The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture.

'Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.

'A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment.'

France are next in action when they take on Netherlands on Friday and the L'Equipe report went onto claim that Mbappe is hoping to feature in that game with a mask, although a final decision will be made closer to the time after seeing how he responds to the injury.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Mbappe - who has 47 goals in 80 France caps - had made light of the incident when he posted on X: 'Any ideas for masks?'

Although he didn't score, Mbappe played a key part in France's winner against Austria with Maximilian Wober scoring an own goal following his cross.

After their clash against the Netherlands on Friday, Les Bleus then take on Poland in their final Group D game on June 25 as they look to win the European Championship for the first time since 2000.
