Canadian far right activist Lauren Southern reveals split from husband (2024)

Canadian far right activist Lauren Southern has revealed her husband 'who worked for the feds' has divorced her for being a 'career deadweight'.

The 27-year-old posted a YouTube video from the woodsdescribing her 'batsh*t' life since she was barred from Britainfor handing out leaflets saying 'Allah is gay' in 2018.

Southern, from Surrey near Vancouver, shared the footage of herself wearing a black vest-top while sat on a tree trunk, alongside a lengthy Twitter explanation for her divorce and experiences since.

She said while she had been relatively lowkey online compared to her 'heyday' in the late 2010s her 'real life' has been a 'fever dream'.

'I've been afraid to talk about it for various reasons, not least of all people wondering if I'm a full blown schizo,' she said.

In a highly personal one-hour-12-minute-long YouTube video, speaking from a woodland the 27-year-old described what her life has been like since she was barred from Britain in 2018

The influencer went on to detail how her 'life fell apart' when her husband filed for divorce two years ago, without offering any financial support for their son.

She said she lived with her parents for months before beginning a 'beautiful healing journey' in an unlikely environment.

Describing the video revelations as part of her 'final phase of healing' by 'creating some congruence between my private life and public life', Southern recounted how she 'married someone who worked in a capacity for the feds' despite being 'treated like an international fugitive'.

Southern, who has not revealed her husband's identity, said they met while he was on 'hiatus' from work.

Later, she married him for 'love' and their shared values of Catholicism, conservatism, andfamily aspirations.

She claims her husband led a 'James Bond lifestyle' until his association with her meant his security clearance was downgraded, limiting his access to certain jobs and promotions.

The influencer said her life 'completely fell apart' after her husband left her and their son two years ago owing to the complications their relationship brought to his job as a 'fed'

Southern claimed she has been treated like 'an international fugitive' after being banned from the UK for distributing leaflets stating 'Allah is gay' and having her visa application in Australia rejected in 2018

Comparing their relationship to 'Romeo and Juliet', she said: 'We genuinely did deeply care for one another, and if anything our lives were just made a living nightmare due to the unorthodox pairing of an activist with someone who required a security clearance for work.

'The reality of losing his life's work became too much for him... Going from living a James Bond lifestyle to being reduced to a boring middle manager with little to no upward mobility is crippling for ambitious men.'

Southern said her ex 'took his resentment for this out' on her, adding that he used a 'variety of lesser reasons to propose divorce' two years ago - including her ADHD.

The YouTuber said she 'can sympathize with the frustration of dealing with an ADHD partner' but claims she 'spent nearly all day cleaning, cooking, caring for our child, laundry, ironing, whatever I could do to help'.

'While no one is perfect I truly don't think I've ever worked so hard at anything in my life as being a good wife,' she said.

'I also began going to a specialized ADHD clinic and taking Vyvanse daily to see if that would satisfy his growing demands that I manage it at threat of divorce.

'Sadly, it did not work, and whether it be genuinely due to my ADHD or his resentment towards me being a career deadweight - my husband left me and our child.'

Southern, who lived with her parents for seven months after the split, said she felt 'devastated' and her life 'fell apart in a moment'.

She said her husband rejected 'all offers for co-parenting mediation' including helping with child support or offering alimony.

'If I'm being honest I nearly lost my mind,' she said. 'I think almost anyone would. I was beyond heartbroken.'

Southern said she found 'community' and began her 'beautiful healing journey' in an unlikely place - an ant-infested cabin without clean running water months after divorce

Southern said that she still wore her wedding ring for several months of 'severe denial', while her 'mental health was as shot as my savings'.

'My brain was honestly broken, but I didn't have the luxury of licking my wounds,' she said.

'My son was depending on me. If not for my friends, including a very few in the political world who knew this story, I don't know what I would've done.'

After living with her parents, Southern lived an 'unconventional' life in an ant-infested cabin without clean running water, which became 'surprisingly the first step of what would become a beautiful healing journey'.

She said her cabin was the 'communal trailer park washer and dryer since noone else had one', adding: 'I found family among the others living there'.

'They gave my son and me what we desperately needed: community, role models, unconditional kindness and love,' Southern went on.

'Believe me when I say that those days rednecking it up in the woods were some of the happiest of my life.

'Every stereotypical idea of trailer park residents was shattered for me.

'These were some of the kindest, most dignified individuals I'd met: any privileged influencers who call the working class lazy only wish they could be so decent.

'I met children living in cars with more manners than any prep kid I'd ever met.'

Southern said she no longer lives on the trailer park, with 'the draw of running water and not waking up to people using your basem*nt as an impromptu cookout spot too much to resist', but has kept in touch with many of the people.'

The influencer said this experience was a huge learning curve, and conceded that she now believes she has been among those engaging in 'performative gaslighting' in the past.

'I've commented on far too many things I had not lived, and got a serious reckoning from reality,' she said.

'I've grown to realize I am no one's ideological avenging angel.I'm just me, and I don't fit into any neat little political box, because life doesn't.

'I have much love and a good amount of agreement with many of my followers still. Just don't expect any one set of talking points of philosophical outlook to inform my work.'

'Far too many people in the world of politics who I know have had their minds colonized by PR campaigns, and are now lost and confused when the pitch no longer applies,' she added.

'Ideals are good, but they're called ideals because they're perfect.

'Perfection is unattainable for humans. Pharisaical sneering over someone's failing to be 'ideal' according to ideological standards only makes our worsening mental health crisis worse.

'And on that note, I just want to say: if anyone else feels their life has completely fallen apart as mine did, know this, there is a light at the end of the tunnel if you choose to see it.'

Southern has been embroiled in controversies since the mid-2010s, including when she was banned from Britain in early 2018 at the age of 22 for distributing leaflets in Luton whichproclaimed 'Allah is a gay God' and 'Allah is trans'.

She was detained in Calais while trying to re-enter the UK on March 13 of the same year and questioned over the posters, which she said had been part of a 'social experiment'.

The influencer elaborated in a subsequent YouTube video that she had wanted to explore how people would react to LGBTQ messages in the Muslim community - but the Home Office slapped her with a lifetime ban.

In July 2018, her visa application in Australia was rejected a day before she had been due to fly out for a speaking tour in the country.

This came after she threatened to cause 'chaos' during the visit, which she was planning alongside fellow firebrand Stefan Molyneux in capital cities throughout the month.

Hours before her departing flight, she received a message from the Australian Visa Bureau advising her she was 'not eligible' to enter the country.
